The newly elected President of the Africa Boxing Federation, Solomon Kargbo, has pledged to transform boxing in Sierra Leone and across the African continent.
Solomon Kargbo was elected a few weeks ago in Nigeria after defeating several contenders, becoming the first Sierra Leonean to hold the prestigious continental position. Prior to his election, he served as the head of boxing competitions during the All-Africa Games in Accra, Ghana, and currently doubles as President of the Sierra Leone Boxing Association.
Upon his return home, he was formally presented to the executive of the National Olympic Committee of Sierra Leone (NOCSL) at its Walpole Street headquarters by officials of the Sierra Leone Boxing Association.
Speaking at the presentation, the Association’s Secretary General, Alhaji Komba, described the moment as historic, noting that boxing is an Olympic sport and that Solomon Kargbo’s elevation represents a major milestone for the sport’s governance in Africa. He said the achievement reflects Sierra Leone’s growing credibility and influence in international sports administration.
In his address, Kargbo outlined his vision for African boxing, beginning with the organization of structured continental competitions starting from regional qualifiers. He explained that winners from the various regions would advance to a continental championship at a venue to be announced.
He assured the boxing fraternity that his continental responsibilities would not distance him from local development. To ensure Sierra Leone remains competitive, he pledged to facilitate the deployment of approved international experts to train local boxers and coaches.
“My aim is to see Sierra Leone winning medals at the Olympic Games and other international competitions,” Kargbo said.
Responding, NOCSL President Prince Vandy Sualley congratulated Kargbo and emphasized the importance of winning laurels at both the Olympic and Commonwealth levels. He noted that Kargbo’s achievement would attract significant development opportunities for the Sierra Leone Boxing Association.
The presentation ended with the NOC executive presenting a jersey and shorts to the Africa Boxing President as a symbolic welcome gesture.
