Organization Overview:

A reputable Air Navigation Service Provider (ANSP) in Liberia is seeking to recruit a highly competent and experienced Air Traffic Controller to enhance the safety, efficiency and continuity of air traffic services in its controlled airspace.

Position Title:

Air Traffic Controller (Area Control)

Place of Work:

Margibi County in Liberia but may from time to time take assignments in Sierra Leone or Guinea.

Role Summary

Reporting to the Area Control Center (ACC) Supervisor, the Air Traffic Controller will be responsible for the safe, orderly and expeditious flow of air traffic within assigned area control sectors. This includes applying relevant ATC procedures, maintaining situational awareness, coordinating with adjacent ATS units, and responding effectively to routine and non‑routine situations.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

The successful candidate will:

  • Provide safe, orderly and expeditious control of aircraft within assigned area control sectors in accordance with applicable national regulations and ICAO Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs)
  • Monitor and manage air traffic flows to maintain required separation standards and prevent conflicts
  • Operate surveillance, flight data processing and communication systems with high accuracy and professionalism
  • Receives and action all relevant flight plans, arrival and departure messages and other information concerning the movement of aircraft
  • Coordinate transfer of control and communications with adjacent sectors and ATS units.
  • Maintain accurate flight progress strips (electronic or paper) and record in an approved manner in the aircraft movement logbook
  • Provide pilots in command of aircraft with such information on weather, aerodrome conditions and navigation aids available as required using standard radiotelephony phraseology
  • Take appropriate actions in emergencies or abnormal situations to mitigate safety risks
  • Alert the appropriate authorities on emergency situations that may lead to incidents within the airspace and assist the supervisor in the coordination of such emergency
  • Fill incident form if necessary and ensure that incidents are recorded in the ATC Logbook
  • Participate in safety and quality management processes and comply with the ANSP Safety Management System (SMS)
  • Check daily the serviceability of all ATC technical & telecommunication equipment and make the appropriate entry in the ATC Logbook
  • Transmit aircraft information relevant to the aerodrome of intended landing as may be available and to maintain a close liaison with the approach control unit concerned
  • Provide ATC clearances to Approaches for all departures as required
  • Ensure that the noticeboard is up to date with current NOTAMs and instructions.
  • Immediately transmit to the MET Unit, the information from the pilots on the en-route weather phenomena

Minimum Qualifications & Experience

  • Must be a Sierra Leonean citizen
  • Must have a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent with proof of academic qualification(s)
  • A valid Air Traffic Controller license is an added advantage
  • At least two (2) years of professional ATC experience, including practical experience in Aerodrome and Approach Control. Experience in area control operations is highly desirable
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the use of ATC equipment and tools
  • Relevant ATC training certificates from recognized training institutions

Knowledge:

  • Sound knowledge of air traffic control procedures, airspace structure, separation minima, aviation regulations, and operational practices
  • Good understanding of surveillance navigation and associated ATC systems
  • Knowledge of human performance and limitations relevant to ATC

Skills:

  • Exceptional Communication: Clear, concise radiotelephony communications with flight crews and ATS units; At least English proficiency level 4 rating in accordance with ICAO language standards
  • Decision‑Making & Problem‑Solving: Effective judgement under pressure; rapid assessment of traffic conflicts
  • Multitasking & Workload Management: Simultaneous handling of multiple aircraft and tasks while maintaining safety
  • Situational Awareness: Maintain mental model of traffic and anticipate conflicts
  • Use of standard phraseology and communication techniques, including accurate readbacks

Competencies:

  • Ability to work under high workload with attention to detail
  • Capacity to coordinate effectively with team members and pilots
  • Able to cope with shift work, including nights, weekends and public holidays.
