Women in the Security Sector Sierra Leone (WISS-SL) on Tuesday, 22nd January 2026, successfully conducted its 4th Elective Leadership Elections with technical support from the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL). The elections were held at the Sierra Leone Correctional Services Canteen in Freetown and brought together female security personnel from across the country.

WISS-SL was established out of a strong desire to champion the cause of women in the security sector, particularly in the areas of recruitment, promotion, capacity building, and the creation of equal opportunities for both men and women. The organization has been in existence for about 18 years and continues to serve as a unified platform for female security personnel to collectively advocate for their rights, welfare, and professional advancement.

Membership of WISS-SL is drawn from a wide range of security and related institutions. These include the Sierra Leone Police (SLP), the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF), the National Fire Force, the Sierra Leone Correctional Services, the Sierra Leone Immigration Department, private security institutions, and civil society organizations such as TEEDWOGA. While the organization is women-focused, it remains open and inclusive, promoting collaboration with female-led groups and allies who support gender equality within the security architecture.

Over the years, WISS-SL has recorded significant achievements. The organization has consistently advocated for the promotion of deserving women into leadership and decision-making positions within their respective institutions. It has also provided platforms for women in the security sector to showcase their professional abilities, leadership skills, and contributions to national security. In addition, WISS-SL has implemented mentorship and capacity-building programmes aimed at empowering young and emerging female officers to grow confidently within their careers.

Leadership of the organization has historically rotated among key security institutions, reflecting its inclusive character. Past leaders have included representatives from the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces, notably the late Captain Feima, Mrs. Frances Nyuma of the Office of National Security (ONS), and Mrs. Elizabeth Turay, who served on behalf of the Deputy Inspector General of the Sierra Leone Police. This rotational leadership structure has helped to strengthen cooperation and unity among women across the various security services.

At the conclusion of the 4th Elective Leadership Elections, Deputy Director General Sierra Leone Correctional Center  Susan B. D. Coker emerged as President while Bintu F. Kamara of the National Fire Force became the Vice President.

The successful conduct of the elections, with support from ECSL, was widely praised by participants as a demonstration of transparency, credibility, and democratic practice within the organization. The outgoing President Elizabeth Turay expressed appreciation to members for their impressive turnout and active participation in the electoral process. She encourage them to maintain the same level of commitment and zeal as the organization continues to grow. Newly nominated President Susan B. D. Coker who is also the Deputy Director General of the Sierra Leone Correctional Centre thanked members for the confidence reposed in her. She pledged to work closely with her executive and the general membership to ensure the growth and betterment of the organization.

With a new leadership in place, WISS-SL is expected to strengthen its advocacy role, expand mentorship and capacity-building initiatives, and continue pushing for equality and professionalism within Sierra Leone’s security sector.
