Leading All People’s Congress (APC) flagbearer aspirant, Dr. Ibrahim Bangura, on Monday commemorated the anniversary of Sierra Leone’s civil war in Kailahun District, calling for unity and reflection as the country continues to grapple with the legacy of the 11-year conflict.

The civil war began on 23 March 1991 in Bomaru, a border town in Kailahun, when the Revolutionary United Front (RUF), led by Foday Sankoh, launched its first attack. The conflict went on to claim more than 50,000 lives, displace millions, and devastate the nation’s infrastructure.

Remembrance and Reflection

At a well-attended meeting of the DIB Movement in Kailahun Town, Dr. Bangura led a moment of silence in honor of those who lost their lives during the war.

A scholar in peace and conflict resolution, he urged Sierra Leoneans particularly APC supporters to draw lessons from the past and work collectively to prevent a recurrence of violence.

Personal Ties to Kailahun

Dr. Bangura highlighted Kailahun’s historical significance, noting that his academic research on women’s roles in peacebuilding had brought him to the district on several occasions.

He described Kailahun as holding a “special place” in his heart, citing both its wartime experiences and its contributions to national peacebuilding efforts.

Praise for APC Development Record

The APC aspirant commended party supporters in the district for their loyalty and resilience. He also praised former President Ernest Bai Koroma for infrastructural developments, including road improvements, a pipe-borne water system, and the district’s main hospital.

Call for Party Unity Ahead of 2028 Polls

Turning to party matters, Dr. Bangura called for unity, discipline, and renewed commitment among APC members ahead of the 2028 general elections.

He urged supporters in Kailahun to remain steadfast and united in order to secure victory for the party.

Endorsement Signals Growing Momentum

The meeting was hosted by APC Regional Chairman Comrade Stanley Moiwo Maya Kaikai and attended by ward leaders, constituency executives, and other regional stakeholders.

In a key moment, APC regional figure Finda Diana Konomanyi publicly endorsed Dr. Bangura, citing his humility, vision, and leadership capacity as qualities needed to move the party forward.

Chairman Kaikai said the gathering was aimed at reaffirming Kailahun’s support for Dr. Bangura’s bid.

Positioning Through Reflection

Observers noted that Dr. Bangura’s decision to mark the anniversary in Kailahun distinguished his campaign, emphasizing reflection and reconciliation in a political landscape often focused on rhetoric.

Race Intensifies

The meeting concluded with renewed calls for unity and discipline within the APC, as competition for the party’s flagbearer position continues to intensify.
