The Chairman of Parliamentary Committee on the Environment, Honorable Ibrahim Tawa Conteh for Constituency 132 has thrown light on the need to protect the environment.
Speaking to reporters, Hon. Tawa maintained that the Constitution of Sierra Leone gives mandate to the President to create Ministries Department and Agencies. The legislator highlighted that it was at this backdrop; President Bio thought it wise to create a separate Ministry of the Environment to look and address the critical and diverse issues in the environment. He described himself as a lucky man because he is the first MP to serve as Chairman to the Parliamentary Committee on the Environment. He said as a Chairman, it is his responsibility to create directive policy for proper coordination and regulation.
He discussed that as a committee, they are currently working on a document together with the Ministry of Lands Country Planning and the Environment to look into policy that would regulate lined institutions to come up with what the people expected in terms of protecting the environment. He sated that deforestation, mining, bush burning contributed greatly to environmental degradation.
He lamented that timber trade could not be abolished but must be regulated because it is a source of revenue generation. The lawmaker spoke on their plan to engage the Committee on Mining in Parliament and promised to hold a workshop to enlighten Parliamentarians on issues of the environment.
