On June 11, a spirit of environmental stewardship and cross-cultural collaboration came alive at the Freetown Secondary School for Girls, as young diplomats from the Chinese Embassy in Sierra Leone joined students and teachers in a meaningful tree planting exercise.
The visit, marked by enthusiasm and shared purpose, brought together members of the diplomatic community and young learners in an activity that symbolized both growth and sustainability. Armed with shovels and seedlings, participants worked side by side to plant trees across the school compound, an effort aimed at promoting environmental awareness while strengthening ties between nations at the grassroots level.

Speaking during the event, Mr. LIU Wei, one of the representatives of the Chinese Embassy, emphasized the importance of youth involvement in environmental protection. He highlighted those small, community-driven actions, like planting trees can have long-lasting impacts when embraced collectively. He also encouraged students to take ownership of the trees, nurturing them as symbols of responsibility and future growth.
Mr. XIA Tianhang, another representative of the Embassy, pointed out that the tree-planting exercise also reflects ongoing cooperation between China and Sierra Leone, particularly in areas of education, development, and environmental sustainability. Such engagements, he added, underscore the importance of people-to-people connections in strengthening bilateral relations.
“As the newly planted trees take root, they stand as living reminders of a shared commitment to the environment, to education, and to the enduring value of collaboration across cultures,” he said.
