Krootown Road, one of Freetown’s busiest commercial arteries, has become a hazard zone for pedestrians, drivers, and traders alike, as blocked drainage systems spill stagnant, foul-smelling water onto the street.

Residents describe daily battles with overflowing drains, broken footpaths, and pervasive stench. TRACE Joenal witnessed one particularly alarming incident: a tricycle (“kekeh”) splashed pedestrians with contaminated water while they navigated between the drain and crumbling pavement. Many victims, dressed for work or school, arrived at their destinations soiled and embarrassed.

The road is not just a commercial hub; it is steeped in history. Krootown hosts one of Freetown’s oldest markets, established in 1898, and the historic Kroo Court House, built between 1890 and 1929, serving as the traditional headquarters of the Kroo community. Yet, infrastructure maintenance has been neglected for decades.

Photographic evidence confirms that Krootown Road and Little Kroo Street have lacked proper drainage since 1977. Many drains are uncovered or broken, creating serious health and safety risks for residents.

Authorities face criticism for inaction. While the Mayor of Freetown launched a flood mitigation initiative, many communities report seeing little or no impact. Traders lament that despite paying market dues and licenses, they are left to contend with dangerous, unsanitary conditions.

“This is a daily nightmare,” one trader told TRACE Joenal. “We risk our health just to do business, while authorities seem more interested in politics than people.”

Public health experts warn that prolonged exposure to contaminated water could trigger outbreaks of disease. The call from residents is clear: political differences must be set aside, and the drainage crisis on Krootown Road addressed immediately.

For a city with such rich history and vibrant community life, neglecting a critical artery like Krootown Road is no longer acceptable. Immediate action is needed or the price will continue to be paid by ordinary citizens.
