A new milestone in community-led development has been reached with the official opening of the Charlie-Ann Pentagon School, a project made possible through a coalition of international donors, local partners, and dedicated community stakeholders.

The school, inaugurated in April 2026, was donated and supported by Ambassador Michael Owen and his family, alongside a network of friends and development partners. Key contributors to the construction include Schools for Salone USA and its local Sierra Leonean partners, SWF International, and Soroptimist International.

The initiative reflects a successful blend of grassroots vision and international collaboration. Community organizers explained that the search for support began with outreach to global institutions, eventually leading to partnerships that funded and delivered the school project.

Speaking during the opening ceremony, stakeholders emphasized that the Charlie-Ann Pentagon School is more than a physical structure; it represents hope and opportunity for children in an underserved area.

“This school stands as a testament to what can be achieved when people come together with a shared purpose,” a speaker noted. “But its future depends on how well the community takes ownership of it.”

Representatives of partner organizations highlighted their commitment to education, particularly the empowerment of girls. The involvement of Soroptimist International was especially noted for its focus on supporting women and girls through access to education and leadership opportunities.

Community leaders and traditional authorities used the occasion to urge parents to prioritize their children’s education by ensuring regular attendance and active participation in school life. They also stressed the importance of maintaining the facility and supporting teachers, whose salaries and welfare remain critical to the school’s sustainability.

Ambassador Michael Owen and his family were widely commended for spearheading the initiative and mobilizing resources through personal networks. Their efforts, alongside contributions from international friends and organizations, enabled the construction of the school and the provision of essential learning infrastructure.

However, speakers also highlighted ongoing challenges, including limited access to healthcare, which they said directly affects children’s ability to learn. Calls were made for expanded support in both education and health sectors to ensure holistic community development.

A central message throughout the event was the need for integrity, accountability, and community ownership. Speakers warned that without these values, even well-funded projects risk failure.

“This school belongs to the people,” one community leader stated. “The donors have done their part. Now it is up to us to protect it, maintain it, and make it thrive.”

Parents, teachers, and pupils were all encouraged to play their respective roles: parents by sending children to school, teachers by delivering quality education, and pupils by committing themselves to learning.

As the ceremony concluded, there was a shared sense of optimism that the Charlie-Ann Pentagon School will serve as a foundation for long-term educational advancement and community transformation.

With continued collaboration between international partners and local stakeholders, the school is expected to nurture future leaders and contribute meaningfully to Sierra Leone’s development agenda.
