The Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, Hon. Abdul Kargbo, has stated that the opposition’s decision to boycott parliamentary activities is aimed at ensuring a more transparent, inclusive, and credible electoral process in Sierra Leone.

Hon. Abdul Kargbo made this statement during a press conference held at his office in the Parliament Building, Tower Hill, Freetown.

He explained that the boycott is intended to draw attention to what the opposition considers critical concerns surrounding the country’s electoral system. According to him, elections are not only manipulated on polling day but can also be influenced by decisions taken long before voting begins, particularly in areas relating to policy, processes, and appointments.

“We want elections that are free, fair, transparent, and inclusive,” he said, adding that the opposition is committed to addressing perceived gaps that could be exploited to undermine the integrity of future elections.

He referenced concerns over previous electoral decisions, including the appointment of the current Chief Electoral Commissioner, which he said contributed to the opposition’s stance.

Hon. Kargbo emphasized that the boycott is not intended to undermine the country or disrupt governance, but rather to strengthen democratic processes. He noted that Sierra Leone’s electoral credibility has been questioned in some international discussions, describing the situation as worrying.

“As an opposition, we have a responsibility to ensure that the electoral process is credible and trusted by all,” he stated.

He further pointed out that decisions taken during past elections were not fully inclusive, stressing that the opposition is now treating electoral matters with greater seriousness. He argued that many governance challenges, including public dissatisfaction over economic issues, are linked to leadership outcomes that stem from the electoral process.

“If the process produces the right leadership, many of the issues affecting citizens will be properly addressed,” he said.

Hon. Kargbo concluded by affirming that the opposition is determined to closely monitor future elections, particularly the 2028 polls, to ensure that they meet acceptable standards.

“We will observe the 2028 elections with the same seriousness and vigilance as major examinations,” he said.

The opposition maintains that its actions are aimed at promoting accountability, strengthening democratic institutions, and safeguarding the will of the people.
